Loving grandmother of Sarah Bartlett. Dear sister of Margaret Qualey of Benedicta, ME, Bernard Brown of AZ and 7 late brothers and sisters. Sister in law of Priscilla Brown of FL. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Daughter of the late Joseph and Ethel E. (Cummings) Brown.
Visiting hours will be held at the MacDonald Funeral Home 1755 Ocean St. Rte 139 Marshfield on Thursday, April 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Christine’s Church 1295 Main St. on Friday, April 20 at 9:00 am. Interment in Brookdale Cemetery Dedham.

Also survived by 4 great granddaughters. Dear brother of Grace Smith of FL, E. Victoria Smith of FL and the late Mrs. Betty Hanfield, Mrs. Gladys McKeon and Mrs. Dorothy Barry. Son of the late John C. and Margaret H. (Scanlon) Smith. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. John was a graduate of Mechanic Arts High School class of 1934. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the Americal Division in the South Pacific. John was awarded the bronze star. He summered in Marshfield since 1950 and permanent resident since 1959.
Visiting Hours will be held at the MacDonald Funeral Home 1755 Ocean St. Rte 139 Marshfield on Sunday, April 22 from 3 to 6 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Christine’s Church 1295 Main St. Marshfield on Monday, April 23 at 9:00 a.m. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery West Roxbury.

Gillespie, Michael F., also known as R2D2, of Marshfield, April 24, 2012 at the age of 67. Beloved husband of Eleanor “Ellie” (McLaughlin) Gillespie for 43 years. Loving father of Lori Ficks and her husband Douglas of Carver and Robert Gillespie and his wife Renee of Raynham. Loving and devoted grandfather of Alison Gillespie. Dear brother of Frederick Gillespie of Roslindale, Deborah Bryson of Needham and Doreen Edmunds and her husband Bob of Framingham. Son of Bernard Gillespie and the late Nellie (Mugford) Gillespie. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Michael was born in Chelsea and raised in Jamaica Plain. He was Mr. Chelsea 1945. Michael graduated from Mission High School. He lived in West Roxbury and moved to Marshfield in 1980. Michael served as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam Era. He was a very proud Marine and loved his country. Michael was a Massachusetts State Trooper for 18 years before retiring. He is remembered for being a great family guy. Michael was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family very much.

Loving mother of John “Jack” Hocking Jr. and his wife Sheila of Hanover, William Hocking and his wife Johanne of Duxbury, Stephen Hocking and his wife Michelle of Marshfield, Michael Hocking and his wife Sharon of Duxbury and Maryann Viola and her husband Anthony of Marshfield. Loving grandmother of 15 grandchildren. Dear sister of John Brown and his wife Mia of Wilmington, Susan Chandler and her husband Leo of Rockport and the late Stephen Brown. Cousin of Karen McKenna of Wilmington, Sister-in-law of William Hocking of Quincy. Also survived by 6 nieces and nephews. She was employed as a home health aid at the Logan Nursing Home, South Shore Respite Care Center and retired from the Carolina Hill Shelter. Ann moved to Marshfield in 1969 from Boston, She loved spending time with her extended family and was so proud when they could all be together. Ann was especially honored to take care of her mother at the end of her mothers life.

Loving mother of Deborah Bohin of Sandwich, Michelle Bohin of Marshfield, Michael Bohin and his wife Sherri of Marshfield and Carolyn Bohin of Marshfield. Loving grandmother of Mikey, Kyle and Tye Bohin and Cameron and Carson Cruz. Dear sister of George Asack of Whitman and Amy Bithoney of Weymouth. Daughter of the late Thomas G. and Mary (Nadar) Asack. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ann was born and raised in Brockton. She graduated from Brockton High School. Ann worked as a telephone operator and then went on to be a hair dresser for 40 years. She worked along side her sister Amy as a hair dresser at Miss Amy’s in Hingham. Ann was a home health aid up until she was 82, taking care of 100 year old Mrs. Bradford. Ann taught CCD, was a Girl Scout leader, she was a Crafter in St. Ann by the Sea Church as well as a Eucharistic minister there for many years and she was a Regent for the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Ann loved her family and enjoyed being surrounded by them.
A service will be held at the MacDonald Funeral Home 1755 Ocean St. Rte 139 Marshfield on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Ann by the Sea Church 591 Ocean St. at 10:00 a.m. Interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Carlyle A. ( Hank ) Hancock, 82 of Marshfield, Massachusetts died May 1, 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in Randolph, VT on June 12, 1929, grew up in Binghamton, NY and lived in Marshfield since 1973. Hank was married for 61 years to the love of his life, Jean M. ( Post ) Hancock. Early in his career, Hank worked as a television announcer for WNBF in New York and later became a broker of investments and insurance for Prudential and Sun Life Financial Services. He was a veteran in the United States Army and a member of the Marshfield Kiwanis Organization. In addition to his loving wife, Hank is survived by his son Mark Hancock and his wife Linda of Pembroke, NH; his son Grant Hancock of Marshfield and his companion Donna Thompson and his daughter Shawna Connor and her husband James of Marshfield. Hank was a wonderful father and grandpa and he had many special times with his grandchildren Melissa, Jeanne, Mark, Kevin and Derrick of New Hampshire and Joseph, Margaret, Sean and Michael of Marshfield as well as his two great-grandsons, Alex and Noah, of NH. He is also survived by his adoring big sister, Joan Fargo and her husband James of Miramar Beach, FL. Hank had many friends and was always quick with a smile or a joke. He was an avid reader, a true blue red Sox fan and enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting for sea glass with his grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Monday May 7, 2012 at Noon at Couch Cemetery in Marshfield with a reception following. Arrangements have been handled by MacDonald Funeral Home in Marshfield.

Mr. Leo Peter Fallon, age 89, passed away on May 5, 2012 at Courtyard Gardens Assisted Living Facility. Mr. Fallon was born in Boston, MA on July 27, 1922 to the late Peter Fallon and Helen Noonan. Leo lived in Quincy and was a resident of Florida for over 25 years. He had been a sales manager for Wheatland Tube. Leo will be remembered by many people for his remarkable kindness and his willingness to help others. We will miss his relentless love and dedication for the Boston Red Sox. Leo was also an avid golfer and a devoted Marine. He will forever be missed by family and friends up and down the Northeast coast. Leo touched the lives of many, many people and he will be surely missed very much. Survivors include his sister; Jean Bennett, Quincy, MA., nieces; Carol (Ocie) Elder, Dorchester, MA., Susan (Richard) Carter, Dover, N.H., and Gail Bennett of Marshfield, MA., nephew; Bob (Lori) Bennett, of Plymouth, MA., also survived by a many loving great nieces and nephews.

Walter was born and raised in Dorchester. He graduated from Boston Trade School. Walter summered in Marshfield for 9 years and he has been a permanent resident for 47 years. Walter was the Deputy Director of Civil Defense in Marshfield as well as the Captain of Auxiliary Police in Marshfield. He was a chauffer for Mayor Curley in Boston and was the owner and operator of Marshfield Cab for over 25 years. Walter served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He was a former member of North Hill Country Club & The Country Club of Halifax. He was a self-employed carpenter for most of his adult life. He served in the US ARMY, stationed in the southern Philippines & New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Myron was the loving father of Carolen Orndorff of Westford, MA, Kenneth W. Osborne and his wife Lee of Whitman, MA, Kevin W. Osborne and his wife Patricia of Plymouth, MA and Myron W. Osborne III of Marshfield, MA. He also leaves his grandchildren, LeAndra Paine, Jeannine Orndorff, Brian Osborne, David Osborne, Kimberly Staley, Joseph Osborne and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Edith Lyons of Brockton, MA. He was the brother of the late Eleanor Osborne, Earl Osborne, Gilbert Osborne and Viola Shalgian. He was the father of the late Elizabeth W. Osborne.

Son of the late Patrick J. and Elsie Roche. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Pat grew up in Roslindale. He was a graduate of Boston Latin School class of 1946 and Boston College class of 1951. Pat and his family moved to Marshfield in 1964. He co-founded Roche Brothers Supermarket with his brother Buddy in 1952, 60 years ago. Pat was a member and past treasurer at Marshfield Country Club. He was a proud alumnus of Boston Latin School and Boston College. Pat was a long time member and Hall of Fame member of Massachusetts Food Association.

Cory Edgardo Whidden, age 19 of Marshfield, died Saturday June 2, 2012. He was born on November 29, 1992 in Bogota, Columbia and came home to Marshfield in the spring of 1993. Cory was the beloved son of Roger W. Whidden Jr. of Marshfield and Mary Judge Whidden, also of Marshfield. Brother to Jocelyn and Jian Whidden of Marshfield, grandson of Shirley Whidden of Dedham, the late Roger W. Whidden Sr. and the late Charles A. Judge and Ella Mae Judge. Cory is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Cory was a lifelong athlete. He enjoyed karate, soccer and snowboarding. He was a gifted artist, aspiring furniture maker and carpenter. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Cory Whidden Memorial Fund c/o 822 Webster Street Marshfield, MA 02050. The fund’s purpose is to create a sacred outdoor space, “Cory’s Compassionate Corner”. This space will honor Cory’s compassionate heart and spirit, and act as a reminder to practice Cory Kindness.

He leaves behind his daughters, Kate Carr and her husband Chris, Kerre McDonough and her husband Bill of Marshfield, Suzy Schutz and her husband Jared of Cave Creek, AZ and his former wife of 35 years, Nancy Ward of Marshfield. The loves of his life, after his children, were his grandchildren. He was the devoted grandfather to Hayden and Ryder Joseph Schutz, Diesel and Roxi McDonough and Mason Carr. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Joseph Ward and brother, John Ward of Canton. He was the devoted brother of Roseleen Catalano of Harwich, Marianne Connaughton of Needham, Frank Ward of Osterville, Sue Callahan of Canton. Joe attended Xavier University in Cincinnati and Gate of Heaven High School in South Boston. Retired from Sylvania, he loved golf and spending time with his family.

Bicknell, Dr. William J. (Bill), of Marshfield, died at home on June 5 at age 75. He was an outspoken, inspirational international health practitioner and advocate who sought to improve the lives of disadvantaged people in more than 60 countries. He was the founder and chair emeritus of the Department of International Health at the Boston University School of Public Health and held a dual appointment at the BU School of Medicine as a professor and director of international health programs in the Department of Family Medicine. During a career that spanned five decades, Bill held posts as the first medical director of the U.S. Job Corps, Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health, acting director of the Neighborhood Health Center Program for the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, and medical director of health and retirement funds for the United Mine Workers of America. Born in Boston and raised in Waban, Mass., Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University in 1958, and an M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine in 1963. He joined the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and was named senior physician for Peace Corps volunteers in Ethiopia. Several years after returning from Ethiopia, Bill earned an MPH from the University of California, Berkeley. After coming to BU in 1978, he focused on establishing the curriculum for the Department of International Health and later established the Center for International Health that was eventually expanded into the current Center for Global Health and Development. Bill devoted the last years of his life to strengthening the work of the Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance, improving the medical system in the Southern African country. He is survived by his wife, Jane Hale; brother Richard and wife Bette Ann of Port Orange, Fla.; son Richard and wife Barbara of Santa Clara, Calif.; son Christopher and wife Kelly of Buxton, Maine; and grandsons Gareth and Julian of Buxton, Maine.
A memorial service will be held at North Community Church, 72 Old Main Street, Marshfield, Mass., on Saturday, June 16 at 11 am. The Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance will construct a house in Bill’s honor for medical students, residents, and visitors at Motebang Hospital in Leribe, Lesotho.

John was born in Boston. He was a chemistry professor (retired) at University of Massachusetts, Boston. John was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War. He was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.

Vallario, Jennie R.(DiPietro), 96, of Marshfield, long time resident of Methuen, died Friday, June 22, two days before her 97th birthday at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, surrounded by her loved ones, following a short illness.
She was Born in Lawrence and educated in Methuen, where she lived until 2007, when she moved to Marshfield. She was the beloved wife of Silvestro D. Vallario, deceased and was a member of St. Christine’s Parish in Marshfield.
Jennie’s greatest gift during her lifetime was to mother her devoted family members and friends who became a part of her extended family. Jennie was always there for everyone who needed tender loving care and comfort, giving of herself unselfishly and untiringly. She was a wizard in the kitchen, consistently cooking authentic Italian dishes until shortly before her death, from recipes handed down through generations of her family who originated in Sessa Arunca, Italy. She was also known for her beautiful rose gardens, lovingly tendered in both Methuen and Marshfield. Her neighbors at Spyglass Landing fondly called her the “Rose Lady.”
She is survived by her brother Anthony DiPietro of Haverhill; daughter Joan and her husband Richard Cooley of Marshfield, grandson Douglas and his wife Dawn Cooley of Marshfield, great grandsons Henry and Harrison Cooley of Marshfield, who will miss her loving presence in their lives. She is also survived by her nieces Elaine Leys of Florida, Vicky Grondin , Gloria Dobbens and Delores Soucy of New Hampshire and Leslie Carter of Haverhill; nephews Alfred DiPietro of Methuen , Frank and Anthony DiPietro of New Hampshire and many great nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 4 to 7:00 p.m. at MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street (Route 139) Marshfield, MA 02050.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at St. Lucy’s Church in Methuen. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence.
